Dear reader,

The international campaign to free Julian Assange and Chelsea Manning is at an important stage. The formal hearings in the UK to extradite Assange to the United States begin in just over three months. A series of urgent warnings have been made about the toll on Assange’s health of what amounts to solitary confinement, psychological torture and other vindictive treatment inside London’s Belmarsh Prison.
UN Special Rapporteur on Torture Nils Melzer stated this month that Assange’s “pattern of symptoms can quickly develop into a life-threatening situation involving cardiovascular breakdown or nervous collapse.”

In the UK, the Socialist Equality Party is standing candidates in the general election. It will campaign in the working class to demand Assange’s freedom, as part of the broader struggle to defend democratic rights against austerity, the growing war danger and the turn towards authoritarian forms of rule.

In November and December, the SEP in Australia and New Zealand will hold public meetings to discuss the political campaign to prevent Assange’s extradition to the United States. The Espionage Act charges against Assange for exposing US war crimes aim to criminalise free speech and journalism and carry a prison term of 175 years.
We ask all newsletter readers to help advertise and promote these initiatives.

Last week, the WSWS commented on a letter sent by Assange to a supporter in France. He encouraged her to organise among her fellow nurses at her workplace and within the nurses’ union.  This appeal should be taken up by all workers who defend Assange. Take information about his case to work. Call for the holding of meetings and move resolutions demanding the immediate and unconditional release of Assange and Manning.

Thank you for your support,
World Socialist Web Site
